On October 8, our Brussels alumni chapter organized a fantastic event in the capital, attended by Dr. Craen and the former Prime Minister of Belgium, Mr. Yves Leterme. There were around 35 people in total, among them EU alumni and representatives of the KBC Bank, which offered their headquarters in Brussels for the occasion. The evening started with a welcome address by Dr. Craen, who informed everybody about recent developments at EU, and was followed by a short presentation about the Alumni Association by the winner of the 2014 Chapter Leader of the Year Award, Xavier de Bergeyck.
Mr. Yves Leterme, Secretary General of IDEA (International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance), gave a detailed presentation entitled ‘Challenges to Democracy in the 21st Century’. He summarized the Stockholm-based institute and the work it does to protect democracy, before looking to the future at objectives that still need to be achieved. Brussels, as the center of the European Parliament, was the ideal backdrop to the gravitas of Mr. Leterme’s speech and our alumni in attendance were privileged to have been able to hear the address in such an intimate environment.
As well as formal speeches, EU alumni events are memorable social occasions too. Guests are always in good company, and it is a great occasion to catch up with old classmates, make new connections and share ideas with the other business leaders in attendance. After the welcome speeches and Mr. Leterme’s presentation, everybody was invited to a standing cocktail dinner in an impressive room of the KBC Bank headquarters, which had a view over the iconic Grand-Place – the most distinctive landmark in Brussels.
