In today’s world, we connect with each other through the push of a button or swipe of a screen. The way that we communicate is constantly evolving. So too is the art of captivating an audience. People want to be entertained, engaged and excited, and their attention needs to be maintained to get your message across. An online presentation is a valuable communication tool in this digital era. A simple, informative, compelling message that reaches a global audience can be very effective.
At EU, our Online MBA students form a global network of collaboration and communication. Here, they give us their top five tips on how to mix modern technology with old-fashioned charisma to engage your audience from halfway across the world.
Keep your slides simple
You must be the focus of your online presentation. Your slides should complement rather than take the focus away from you and your message. The most effective slides are visual, with images rather than lots of text. If you feel the need to add text to your presentation, stick to simple quotes or keywords to emphasize your point.
Add a dash of humor
Audiences love to be entertained. Using humor is a good way to connect with your audience, and if your presentation is fun and engaging instead of dry and boring, they are much more likely to listen to you and remember your message.
Why do we watch movies and read books? It has been proven time and time again that humans use stories to help understand the world we live in and to connect with each other. If you have a great story that you can tie into your topic, it will give emotional depth and meaning, making the presentation more memorable.
Be short and to the point
Getting their attention is one thing. Keeping it is another. A long, rambling presentation won’t maintain your audience’s focus. A simple, concise online presentation is more likely to get your message across and prevent your audience from nodding off. It also creates space for a Q&A session and leaves room for spontaneous interaction with your audience.
Practice, practice, practice
If you are the type of person who feels uncomfortable speaking in front of an audience, the only way to get rid of that pounding heart and those sweaty palms is by being prepared. Test your presentation on your family, friends, roommates and anyone that is willing to help. Feedback is key! Is your timing right? Is your presentation entertaining and easy to follow? Remember, practice makes perfect. The more times you do your presentation, the more confident you will feel. If you are still feeling nervous, close your eyes and take a couple of deep and relaxing breaths before the start of the presentation. Imagine that your audience are the friends that you trust the most. Remember, the audience wants to understand you. That is why they are there.
Being a pro at online presentations is possible with a little courage, preparation and confidence. It is a skill that everyone can master. And if you master online presentations, you have a powerful tool in the business world. All it takes is a little bit of effort and some insider information.
