It was a day of sun, smiles, celebration and cocktails as\u00a0students, parents, faculty and friends\u00a0gathered for the year’s most eagerly awaited event: EU Barcelona\u00a0Commencement 2017!<\/p>\n

Pre-show prep<\/h2>\n

The commencement ceremony\u00a0took place\u00a0at Hotel Pullman Barcelona Skipper, a luxurious 5-star hotel\u00a0by the\u00a0beach.\u00a0Students, parents and well-wishers\u00a0arrived\u00a0shortly after lunchtime, soaking up the\u00a0atmosphere and waiting in anticipation for the event to begin.\u00a0A short dress rehearsal gave a taste of things to come and ensured the smooth flow of the\u00a0ceremony.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Caps in the air<\/h2>\n

Graduates and\u00a0undergraduates then\u00a0made their way\u00a0out into the\u00a0Barcelona sunshine\u00a0for the all important class of 2017 photo, complete with the traditional cap toss.\u00a0After\u00a0a few last minute adjustments to gowns, tassels and speeches,\u00a0everyone was\u00a0ready to take their place in time for the commencement\u00a0ceremony to begin.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Timely words of wisdom<\/h2>\n

Jean-Claude Biver, chairman of Hublot and Zenith, CEO of Tag Heuer and president of the LVMH Watch Division, gave a stirring speech, urging students to shape their own future.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYour future must be totally different from today. Shake planet Earth! You are going to make the economy; make this century yours. I have the biggest hope because I know the new generation, I see the new generation and I learn every day from the new generation.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Then came the time for\u00a0the legendary watchmaker\u00a0to\u00a0present EU President Dr. Dirk Craen with the gift of\u00a0a tremendously large Hublot watch,\u00a0to take prominent place in the new\u00a0Barcelona campus building.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

CEO of Reuge, Kurt Kupper, then spoke of how EU students have an advantage over their contemporaries.<\/p>\n

\n

“You\u00a0already learn how to deal with other cultures and that’s so vital today… the world is becoming smaller. We need to understand each other.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He went on to emphasize the importance of making connections, the old-fashioned way.<\/p>\n

\n

“From my point of view, what’s very important is networking. Talking, talking, talking! I’m not talking about a Skype conversation, I’m not talking about Whatsapp, I’m talking about real life… We, the old guys, we\u00a0meet with people, we discuss with people, and we try to evolve and learn from each other.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Dr. will see you now<\/h2>\n

EU President, Dr. Dirk Craen then addressed the students:<\/p>\n

“A world of infinite opportunities is waiting for you. Be game changers.\u00a0Your success will be influenced by your ideas, your fast acting, your creativity, your vision and, don’t forget, your imagination.\u00a0Be bold, brave and brilliant!”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Class of 2017<\/h2>\n

Next, special awards\u00a0were presented. Among the winners were\u00a0Toni Ti\u00f3 and Jean-Claude Biver, who\u00a0received the leadership awards, EU alumnus Ricardo G\u00f3mez, who received the award for\u00a0entrepreneurship, and the Gasol Foundation, who won the social responsibility award, accepted by executive director Cristina Ribes. Other winners included Oscar Parella, Kongoh, Ricoh and Walter Pack.<\/p>\n

Then came the roll call. Graduates and\u00a0imminent graduates were called to the stage, before special awards were presented to students and faculty in recognition of outstanding performance.<\/p>\n

Just before the commencement ceremony came to a close, top performing students took to the stage. Evan Planchon, BA (Hons) in Sports\u00a0Management\u00a0and president of the EU student board, gave the undergraduate speech.<\/p>\n

“We are the next generation of leaders. We live in a difficult and challenging\u00a0world. It is our duty\u00a0to\u00a0make ethical and smart decisions in business. Believe in yourself, trust yourself and respect yourself. It is united that we will rise.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Rodin Affourtit, Thomas Miessen\u00a0and Akshay Umesh, all MBA students, gave the graduate speeches. Miessen spoke about the importance of challenging yourself.<\/p>\n

“When was the last time you did something for the first time? I encourage you to think about these words and keep on being curious and always hunger for more. Because, after all, learning and discovering new things is what makes life worthwhile and helps us to evolve.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let the fun commence<\/h2>\n

Shortly after the ceremony,\u00a0the celebrations commenced, with cocktails and hors d\u2019oeuvres<\/span> enjoyed in the hotel’s garden bar. Students mingled with family, faculty and friends, relating memories of their time at EU and\u00a0speaking of their future plans,\u00a0with views of the Mediterranean Sea and the sound of background jazz\u00a0complementing the jubilant mood.<\/p>\n
