{"id":27502,"date":"2020-01-30T09:30:52","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T07:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/?p=27502"},"modified":"2020-10-14T16:24:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T14:24:03","slug":"promising-startups-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/promising-startups-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Promising Startups to Watch in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europe is home to roughly 12% of the world\u2019s unicorns (startups that have reached a $1 billion valuation), including N26, Flixbus, Deliveroo and BlaBlaCar. 2020 is expected to be another huge year for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" the European startup scene (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/startup-entrepreneur\/\" target=\"_blank\">the European startup scene<\/a>, with creative companies disrupting markets and solving problems in a myriad of innovative ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\nare three startups to keep your eye on in 2020, in three sectors that are\npredicted to continue growing throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B2B Fintech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/findexable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Findexable_Global-Fintech-Rankings-2020exSFA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">European fintech startups received 20% of VC funding<\/a>, an outsized proportion when compared to other sectors, and a number of these have started to expand internationally.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German challenger bank N26, with more than 3.5 million customers, and UK-based Monzo, with more than 2 million customers, both launched in the US in Summer 2019. These retail solutions are addressing a previously unmet demand for banking services from SMEs, paving the way for future startups. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/qonto.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27503\" width=\"778\" height=\"405\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new challenger bank to watch is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/qonto.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Qonto<\/a>, founded in 2016 to address what they say is a broken business banking system in Europe. <strong>A neobank for SMEs and freelancers, Qonto allows companies to have greater control over their finances by offering a streamlined and modern banking experience.<\/strong> They plan to accelerate growth in 2020 by expanding internationally and becoming a fully licensed bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Meets Healthcare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence \u2013 from machine learning, deep learning and robotics, to natural language processing \u2013 is reinventing modern healthcare, allowing for faster and more accurate diagnoses with higher success rates. One of the world&#8217;s highest-growth industries, Accenture&nbsp;forecasts that the&nbsp;AI healthcare&nbsp;market, valuated at around $600 million in 2014, will grow at an incredible annual compound rate of 40%, reaching $6.6 billion by 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DTrLhK9X4AUp0ZZ.jpg\" alt=\"brainomix healthcare\" class=\"wp-image-27507\" width=\"798\" height=\"571\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UK startup <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/brainomix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brainomix<\/a> leverages <strong>artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms to support the clinical assessment of stroke patient\u2019s CT scans, improving the time it takes to detect neurological and cerebrovascular diseases.<\/strong> Dr Michalis Papadakis, CEO and co-founder of Brainomix, expects to see artificial intelligence and machine learning \u201cbecome the driving force behind imaging diagnostics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tech for Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social\nand environmental challenges are key drivers for innovation, with startups\nfrequently being established to tackle some of the world\u2019s toughest challenges.\n2020 will see even more startups aligning themselves with the UN\u2019s Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals, including Goal 2: Zero Hunger, Goal 4: Quality Education and\nGoal 5: Gender Equality. Impact startups, motivated by tackling these global\nchallenges, are spurring ingenuity and developing new sustainable business\nmodels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN estimates that 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted each year, which is equivalent to roughly one third of the food produced annually for human consumption. Food waste also contributes about 8% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/82019077_474511609851574_442354676273250304_o-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27510\" width=\"810\" height=\"811\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mette Lykke, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/toogoodtogo.co.uk\/en-gb\">Too Good to Go<\/a>, created a \u2018marketplace for what would normally end up in the bin\u2019 to address these startling food waste statistics. The <strong>17 million users of the Too Good to Go app are connected to restaurants and markets to purchase unsold food \u2013 food that would otherwise be thrown in the bin \u2013 for a fraction of the price<\/strong>. The Danish app is active in 14 countries already and is expecting to expand to the U.S.A. in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harness Your Ambitions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\nnew generation of founders are entering the European startup scene. The next\nset of success stories \u2013 and possibly unicorns \u2013 could emerge from anywhere in\nthe ecosystem.
