Technological change has reshaped the workplace over the last two centuries, but the speed with which automation technologies are developing today, and the scale at which they are disrupting the world of work, are without precedent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Conversation to Prepare for&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>t<\/strong><strong>he Future<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an&nbsp;#EULive panel discussion hosted by Jon-Hans,&nbsp;the Academic Dean of our online campus, attendees&nbsp;gained&nbsp;insights&nbsp;into the future of business globally and the skills that would be needed to advance their career in this rapidly changing climate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>On the panel was&nbsp;entrepreneur&nbsp;Julian&nbsp;Baladurage,&nbsp;Co-Founder and CEO of&nbsp;end-to-end website as a service provider&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mbj.london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MBJ London<\/a>. Julian&nbsp;has grown the company from just two people to a team of fifty spread across three continents. He was joined by&nbsp;legal consultant and researcher&nbsp;Alexandra Severino,&nbsp;who alongside teaching at EU, lectures at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.&nbsp;The third and final panelist was eBusiness expert&nbsp;Manal&nbsp;Negmeldin, Head of Digital and Omnichannel at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elarabygroup.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ELARBY<\/a>,&nbsp;and Founder and CEO of E-Business School.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;fascinating&nbsp;panel discussion responded to audience to&nbsp;questions about what will come next in&nbsp;global&nbsp;business and how they can prepare&nbsp;for&nbsp;the new normal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here,&nbsp;we\u2019ve consolidated the expert opinions of&nbsp;our&nbsp;panelists into predictions&nbsp;for what will come next&nbsp;and advice to help business leaders, entrepreneurs,&nbsp;students, graduates and jobseekers&nbsp;thrive&nbsp;in the post COVID-19 world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>W<\/strong><strong>ill&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>B<\/strong><strong>usiness&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>L<\/strong><strong>ook&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>L<\/strong><strong>ike&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>ost COVID-19?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The new normal will be a distance economy<\/strong>, enabling us to cope with the continued presence of the virus. This provides fertile ground for new initiatives\u00a0to emerge and claim shifting consumer attention.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Digitalization has been accelerated <\/strong>by the necessity for employees to work remotely and\u00a0for\u00a0companies to transition to online business models.\u00a0This will likely result in:\u00a0<ul><li>An increase in remote and flexible working in the industries where that\u2019s possible.\u00a0<\/li><li>Teleworking becoming\u00a0enshrined in\u00a0the\u00a0legal codes of most companies.\u00a0<\/li><li>Incidences of hacking\u00a0and spyware\u00a0increasing,\u00a0requiring more careful vigilance and better protective software.\u00a0<\/li><li>A rise in eBusiness and e-Learning \u2013 searches for both have increased dramatically in the past months (eBusiness by 80% and e-Learning by 200% according to panelist and\u00a0eBusiness expert Manal\u00a0Negmeldin).\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Laws and regulations will have to be updated\u00a0<\/strong>to accommodate changes to the economy:\u00a0\u00a0<ul><li>Lawmakers must\u00a0ensure\u00a0workers&#8217;\u00a0rights\u00a0remain\u00a0protected\u00a0in the new ways\u00a0we are working.\u00a0<\/li><li>In countries such as Portugal and Germany,\u00a0laws protecting workers make hiring and firing employees complex.\u00a0Changes\u00a0to the law\u00a0will allow\u00a0companies trying to get back on their feet to make more rapid decisions, thereby decreasing levels of unemployment.\u00a0However, such changes will need to be accompanied by state support for people who lose their jobs, particularly as we will be entering a recession.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Career\u00a0paths and the skills in demand will change:\u00a0<\/strong><ul><li>The gig economy will grow:\u00a0the new skills people have gained and enterprises that have been started during this time will result in more \u2018portfolio careers\u2019,\u00a0which offer the flexibility and variety\u00a0many have\u00a0come to expect and appreciate.\u00a0<\/li><li>Skills that relate to\u00a0the\u00a0rising sectors of digital transformation, eCommerce,\u00a0e-Learning, fintech and blockchain will be highly valued. Although some roles will become redundant, other new roles will emerge as markets shift.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Companies will seek multi-skilled employees with a broader, rather than deeper expertise \u2013 people who are more\u00a0able\u00a0to be agile and flexible to changing business needs.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Corporate Social Responsibility is expected to become more integral<\/strong> to the fabric of successful\u00a0businesses. Consumers now have heightened expectations having seen how admirable companies have supported staff and local communities during this time.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Perception of\u00a0debt is changing<\/strong>. Many governments have had to take on heavy debt and\u00a0economists are now suggesting\u00a0this\u00a0is\u00a0fine\u00a0as long as a country grows\u00a0faster than its debt.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Thrive in the New Normal<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our panelists had valuable advice to share with business leaders and entrepreneurs:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Use analytics <\/strong>to understand who is engaging with your product\/service. Has your audience changed? Use the insights gained&nbsp;to:&nbsp;<ul><li>Inform decisions about the direction and shape your business should take.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Inform your communications strategy. This should be amended to&nbsp;take&nbsp;into consideration&nbsp;how customers&#8217; needs and desires have changed.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Be open to change<\/strong>.&nbsp;<ul><li>Consider different ways of working \u2013 discover and keep the best aspects of how you\u2019ve adapted over the past few months.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Asses the suitability of your business model for this time and consider changing it if needed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/people-on-a-video-call-4226140.jpg\" alt=\"remote work\" class=\"wp-image-28955\" width=\"782\" height=\"521\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For students, graduates and jobseekers, the panel had the following words of wisdom to share:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure the <strong>qualities on your CV<\/strong> reflect what employers are looking for now:&nbsp;<ul><li>Demonstrate your flexibility, agility and creativity.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Show you are willing and qualified to participate in the design of the business and important decisions about the shape it will take in the near to longer-term future.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Remember, a broader skill set will be valuable to employers uncertain of exactly what they will need from their team in this extended&nbsp;period of flux.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>The job market will be challenging for a while<\/strong>.&nbsp;Consider using&nbsp;this time to gain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/skills-hot-demand-coronavirus-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">valuable additional skills and knowledge<\/a> that will make you more hirable. However, make sure you take a structured approach to online learning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>First, decide&nbsp;on&nbsp;the career path you want to follow.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Then, research courses carefully.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Make sure you understand&nbsp;which&nbsp;qualifications will help you on&nbsp;your&nbsp;path&nbsp;and how.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Check that the courses you\u2019re interested in will be desirable to the companies you want to work with and&nbsp;are appropriate for&nbsp;the roles you\u2019re pursuing.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analyze, Reflect and Learn<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coronavirus has created a more complex environment&nbsp;that is&nbsp;prone to change. To thrive,&nbsp;we need to constantly adapt, learn and inform ourselves to stay relevant and create value that people will recognize. This is true both for&nbsp;businesses and employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panelists at this #EULive event&nbsp;encouraged attendees&nbsp;to remain optimistic and to take advantage of the opportunity to reflect and move slowly, a precious commodity in a world which had been steadily gathering pace.&nbsp;Moving through this time and towards the new normal, we should be open to learning and&nbsp;to&nbsp;gathering&nbsp;useful&nbsp;insights that will support our personal and professional growth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EU Business School can prepare you with the skills, practical experience and growth-mindset necessary to stand out in the business world of tomorrow.
