In order to&nbsp;maintain profitability, retailers need to consider how they differentiate between their in-store and online offering.&nbsp;Using&nbsp;cutting-edge technology will help businesses embrace this change&nbsp;successfully.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here,&nbsp;we explore&nbsp;how&nbsp;AI can be applied&nbsp;in&nbsp;retail&nbsp;and&nbsp;look at some&nbsp;examples of businesses&nbsp;already&nbsp;taking advantage of this technology to get ahead.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Revolutionizing-Retail-with-Artificial-Intelligence_v8.png\" alt=\"artificial intelligence retail\" class=\"wp-image-29737\" width=\"806\" height=\"1472\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI has&nbsp;been described as, \u201cAn area of computer science devoted to developing systems that can be taught or learn to make decisions and predictions within specific contexts.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI incorporates machine learning and algorithms, both of which can be applied to retail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Role of A<\/strong><strong>rtificial&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>I<\/strong><strong>ntelligence<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;in Retail<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI is already being used&nbsp;by savvy retailers&nbsp;to improve&nbsp;productivity and profitability.&nbsp;Here are some of the ways AI technology can be applied in retail.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Using and&nbsp;Organizing Data<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the&nbsp;primary&nbsp;uses of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/benefits-ai-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> is&nbsp;organizing and making sense of the vast quantities of data that businesses generate and process every day.&nbsp;Data configuration&nbsp;is a time-intensive task that does not require human intelligence. AI can be used to&nbsp;manage product data,&nbsp;align information&nbsp;from several&nbsp;different sources&nbsp;(or suppliers), re-format&nbsp;it for uniformity in&nbsp;a&nbsp;centralized system&nbsp;and automatically generate&nbsp;accurate&nbsp;SEO&nbsp;enhanced&nbsp;product tags and descriptions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from limiting human fatigue, <strong>using AI&nbsp;in this way&nbsp;ensures&nbsp;a level of&nbsp;consistency and accuracy that will enable retailers to&nbsp;manage stock&nbsp;better,&nbsp;forecast sales&nbsp;and&nbsp;order or&nbsp;produce&nbsp;products accordingly<\/strong>.&nbsp;It also increases&nbsp;product&nbsp;searchability, thus improving sales outcomes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, this benefits&nbsp;the business\u2019 bottom line as well as&nbsp;having a positive impact on&nbsp;sustainability by limiting waste.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Creating Bespoke Experiences<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increasingly, consumers expect personalized experiences. This has accelerated&nbsp;what\u2019s&nbsp;been referred to as the decline of the high street&nbsp;in the UK; visiting the shops does not hold its&nbsp;former&nbsp;appeal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a store presence is no longer revenue-generating.&nbsp;Instead, retailers need to use shop space to provide memorable and meaningful experiences to shoppers that bring the brand to life and build customer loyalty.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s&nbsp;more, increasing distrust,&nbsp;misinformation&nbsp;and&nbsp;overwhelming&nbsp;choice are fueling a desire for&nbsp;increasingly&nbsp;personalized experiences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI is already being used to&nbsp;improve&nbsp;both the online and offline&nbsp;retail&nbsp;experience<\/strong>. Looking ahead, there\u2019s&nbsp;no shortage of innovative ways to use&nbsp;artificial intelligence&nbsp;to enhance retail businesses. All&nbsp;that\u2019s needed&nbsp;is imagination&nbsp;and an informed understanding of the sector.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three Retailers&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Leading<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;the Way with AI&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside&nbsp;from the increasingly familiar uses of AI we\u2019ve&nbsp;already&nbsp;explained, there are some exciting innovations&nbsp;in play&nbsp;that give a glimpse of what the future of retail could look like. Here are three examples of businesses&nbsp;using AI with imagination.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Fully Automated Retail Stores<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly, Amazon is one of the companies leading the way when it comes to using artificial intelligence. Their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NrmMk1Myrxc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon Go<\/a>&nbsp;stores offer a seamless shopping experience that exemplifies&nbsp;convenience. The machine scans\u00a0their brainwaves to\u00a0assess\u00a0their reaction\u00a0to each piece, before presenting\u00a0them with tailored recommendations\u00a0informed by\u00a0their preferences. <strong>The entire\u00a0experience\u00a0is\u00a0automatic;\u00a0customers\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to say a word<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/retail\/personalization-in-retail#:~:text=The%20idea%20that%20a%20personalized,their%20customer%20experience%20was%20personalized.\" target=\"_blank\">Shopify<\/a>, almost half of American shoppers say they have spent more than originally planned because their experience was personalized.&nbsp;This memorable experience is an innovative way to enhance brand perception while increasing sales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Machine Learning&nbsp;Secures Customer Loyalty<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a similar vein, online thrift store&nbsp;ThredUp&nbsp;is using AI technology to improve the recommendations it makes&nbsp;to&nbsp;customers. They\u2019ve recently launched&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thredup.com\/goody\" target=\"_blank\">Goody Boxes<\/a>, a curated selection of&nbsp;second-hand&nbsp;clothing sent to customers to try at their leisure. They can return, free of charge, any items they don\u2019t want. Customers&nbsp;start the process by completing a style questionnaire. As they use the service, <strong>the system learns&nbsp;more about their style&nbsp;from the items they keep and send&nbsp;back<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only does this delight customers, who discover clothing they love that they may never have chosen themselves, it also enables&nbsp;the&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;of&nbsp;second-hand clothing (with the associated benefits of low-costs&nbsp;and&nbsp;sustainability) without the negative aspects of the experience (time-consuming searches through over-full stores&nbsp;and digital platforms).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are just some of the myriad ways AI&nbsp;is being&nbsp;used to&nbsp;make&nbsp;streamlined, personal, entertaining&nbsp;retail a reality. Here we\u2019ve focused on&nbsp;examples of innovation in&nbsp;customer experience, but AI&nbsp;is also being used to&nbsp;support&nbsp;business processes.&nbsp;Walmart, for example, has introduced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_j2oh432RFY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shelf-scanning robots<\/a>&nbsp;in several of&nbsp;its&nbsp;stores to complete,&nbsp;\u201crepeatable, predictable and manual\u201d tasks, freeing their staff to engage meaningfully with consumers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding Success at the Forefront of Business<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adopting AI is not a shortcut to success. Brands and business leaders need to be aware of the trends shaping the future of retail and the changing priorities of consumers.
