{"id":34775,"date":"2022-02-16T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/?p=34775"},"modified":"2025-07-29T14:46:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T12:46:29","slug":"the-truth-about-decreasing-attention-spans-in-university-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/the-truth-about-decreasing-attention-spans-in-university-students\/","title":{"rendered":"The Truth about Decreasing Attention Spans in University Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s a widely held belief that students have short attention spans<\/strong> &#8211; somewhere between 10-15 minutes long. However, if we look at some of the scientific studies conducted over the last 15 years, we can see that there is little evidence to support this claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2007, psychologists Karen Wilson and James H. Korn discovered that student note-taking generally declines over the course of a lecture, but found no evidence of a consistent 10-15 minute attention span. Indeed, they concluded that, \u201cWhile there may be a pattern of decline in student attention during a lecture, the exact length of the average attention span wasn\u2019t determined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another study found that <strong>attention lapses varied at different points during a one-hour lecture<\/strong>. After an initial \u201csettling in\u201d period, observers noted breaks in attention at 10-18 minutes into the lecture. By the end, breaks were more frequent, occurring every 3-4 minutes. These findings do not offer definitive proof that students can only concentrate for 10-15 minutes at a time, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2010, researchers surveyed chemistry students in three different classes, all taught via different methods. The students were asked to report breaks in their attention using a clicker, so the scientists could study students\u2019 attention span when exposed to different teaching styles. The results of this experiment showed that lapses in attention actually occur more frequently than the 10\u201315 minute theory suggests, with short breaks in attention occurring at 30 seconds, four to five minutes, seven to nine minutes, and so on throughout the lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/study.euruni.edu\/info-study-business-europe?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_mode=30&amp;utm_campaign=16022022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"472\" height=\"72\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MicrosoftTeams-image-92-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35518\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, this research shows a link between interactive learning styles and the length of a student\u2019s attention span. Fewer breaks occurred during discussions and demonstrations than during lecture periods, leading the scientists to conclude that, \u201cActive learning methods may have \u2018dual benefits\u2019:<strong> engaging student attention during a segment, and refreshing attention immediately after a segment<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1969\" height=\"1313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/49816895_1286183118203810_782460788412514304_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34791\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Impact of Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many teachers believe that new technologies have created an easily distracted generation of students with short attention spans<strong>, technology is still generally seen as a positive force in the education sector<\/strong>. According to a survey carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/\">Pew Research<\/a>, nearly 75% of teachers believe that the internet and search engines has a \u201cmostly positive\u201d impact on student research skills. In one study, medical students at the University of California reported <strong>scoring 23% higher on their exams after being given tablets to use in class<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assistant director for research at Pew, Kristen Purcell, reflected on these findings: \u201cWhat we\u2019re labelling as \u2018distraction\u2019, some see as a failure of adults to see how these kids process information. They\u2019re not saying distraction is good but that the label of \u2018distraction\u2019 is a judgment of this generation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/how-education-plays-a-role-in-the-empowerment-of-women\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32418\">In order to mitigate the risk of distraction, teachers have to reevaluate how they are using technology to teach their students<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, as much as technology can be used as an effective learning tool inside and outside the classroom, there\u2019s no denying that one of the biggest challenges faced by educators today is the distraction posed by social media.<strong> Students are distracted by their phones during class, and even without that distraction, the time they spend on social media outside the classroom has an impact on their attention spans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mit.edu\/\">MIT<\/a> found that <strong>the ideal length for an instructional video is less than six minutes long<\/strong>. Small class sizes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Motivation is key to keeping your students engaged. You need to give them a reason to pay attention in your classes. Be clear about your expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active participation in class demonstrates an understanding and engagement with the learning materials. However, when wanting to make a good impression on the instructor, students may be hesitant to speak up, for fear of getting the answer wrong. This can get in the way of discussion-based learning, which works best when everyone feels confident enough to share their ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get all your students talking, it\u2019s important to create a safe and open classroom environment and set your expectations from day one. Here are some ideas for how you can start the discussion and keep it going:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25cf <strong>Call on students<\/strong>. If you are going to call on students, make it clear, so no one\u2019s caught off guard. Give the individual a chance to answer, and encourage them to have a go, even if they\u2019re not sure.
