Let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theory vs. Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is, of course, a place for textbooks in management. There are multiple management theories and principles that describe the methods and techniques that have worked in many organizations across different cultures and contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But nothing replaces practical experience. By the time they reach the top of their tree, <strong>company CEOs have practical experience in spades<\/strong>. Indeed, how many times have you heard a seasoned company executive say in their commencement address, \u201cCongratulations on graduating. But you\u2019ll find when you get out into the real world, things will be different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This doesn\u2019t mean throwing away the textbook. It means <strong>applying theoretical learning to the unique circumstances in which you find yourself<\/strong>. This is why learning from leaders is important \u2013 at some point, they\u2019ve all been in the same position as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.euruni.edu\/info-study-business-europe\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=landing-generic-blog-30&amp;origen=30&amp;campaign=landing-generic-blog-30&amp;utm_mode=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"472\" height=\"72\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MicrosoftTeams-image-68.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35623\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding Your Leadership Path<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the long list of leadership skills and qualities that fill the shelves of management libraries, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/how-one-effective-leader-can-drive-organizational-change\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"37211\">the only sure thing is that not every leader possesses all of these qualities<\/a><\/strong>. Observing and learning from different leaders proves the point. They all have different strengths and approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up to nine different leadership styles have been noted in the literature, from charismatic to autocratic. Although it is rare for a leader to fit neatly into one of these categories, <strong>it is useful to listen to and observe different leaders to see whether you can identify a dominant leadership approach<\/strong>. This helps you to start formulating the style (or styles) that best suits your own personality and temperament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MicrosoftTeams-image-95.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35853\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">See What Leadership Looks Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Management and leadership are often pared down to two activities: making decisions and building relationships with people. It\u2019s this second function that causes many otherwise competent managers to come unstuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why? Because <strong>people skills, as they\u2019re sometimes called, require empathy and emotional intelligence<\/strong> (EQ), and although we may be familiar with the definition of these terms, they\u2019re not something one can learn from a textbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you will observe these qualities in the leaders with whom you engage. Empathy and EQ usually improve with experience and maturity. They\u2019re not unheard of qualities in the young leader, but are almost always recognizable in the leader &#8211; the mentor and guide &#8211; whom one looks up to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you want to learn from leaders, look at their capacity to build relationships with their colleagues at all levels, and also with their customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.euruni.edu\/info-study-business-europe\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=landing-generic-blog-30&amp;origen=30&amp;campaign=landing-generic-blog-30&amp;utm_mode=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36227\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Than Running a Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you observe true business leaders in action, you often see that they also lead other areas of community life. This may be as a board member of an NGO, serving on the governing body of a school, on the committee of a local sports club or theater trust, or coaching the local U-10 football team. Why is this so often the case?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/why-leaders-should-both-push-and-pull-their-teams\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"37255\">Leaders like to be involved and committed<\/a><\/strong>, and they like working with people. In turn, people enjoy working with them, and can be persuasive in urging them to lead so that others may follow. Talk to established business leaders and see how dedicated they are. Their involvement is also often a part of their intentional networking strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Becoming involved in community activities is a good way to develop your own leadership skills and networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watch How Leaders Communicate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decisions, relationships \u2014 and communication skills! <strong>Leaders are great communicators, and there\u2019s no better way to learn this skill than by watching them in action<\/strong> and seeing the effect it has on an audience. It\u2019s the perfect starting point to help you practice some of these same skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/puid_1a4b7828-c7c8-4107-bd95-4779dc10058c_13076-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"learning from leaders EU business school\" class=\"wp-image-37440\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning from Leaders gives you the opportunity to observe leadership in practice. It is also <strong>a wonderful chance to drop some names into a job interview<\/strong> or networking activity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was listening to a talk by Zev Siegl, the founder of Starbucks, the other day.
